Saint-Francois-d'Assise is a French catholic elementary school located in the heart of Hintonburg, with students coming from a catchment covering a large area that includes part of downtown Ottawa (from Elgin Street) heading westbound all the way to Churchill Avenue in Westboro. This school has played an important role in supporting francophone culture in this urban area and meeting the increasing demand by local families for quality french education. At the heart of this school is a diverse and multicultural student population that displays great curiosity for the broad curriculum that is taught within the walls of the school. However, come outdoor time, the children also crave to play and challenge themselves physically.
As is common with many urban schools, Saint-Francois-d'Assise has a modest-sized school yard that consists almost entirely of asphalt. In the past, there was little incentive to invest in a renewal of the school yard as Saint-Francois-d'Assise has always benefitted from backing out onto Hintonburg Park. This public space has largely provided the play structures and green space for students to use at lunch and recess. However, as a result of changes implemented by the provincial government in the last few years, elementary schools are now required to provide fully enclosed areas for kindergarten students to play in.
The school's administration and its teachers have made great efforts to make the school yard a fun place for the students to play with games and activities. However, a renewal is now desperately needed to create a school yard that is safe, fun for all student ages and that will encourage children to be active. A renewed yard would also allow the school to take full advantage of all its property.
The school's administration, in consultation with students and the parent council, has developed a proposed plan for the school yard renewal. We, the school's parent council, are leading a fundraising campaign to ensure the school obtains the funding needed to make the plan come to life.
